Textile mills in the deep south after the Civil War brought about the creation of mills. The mills were not good places to work. The buildings were to small for all the equipment and people who were working. Most times the buildings were not build well so during the summer they could not be cooled and during the winter they could not be heated. As a result of this the workers often were sick. With the workers sick and being in tight fitting areas infections and germs spread causing constant illness among the people. Most mills did not have proper lighting and were dark and drabby. The mill workers were expected to work long hours and worked for little pay.
